A growing number of fences are being installed using metal posts or poles. The techniques are similar with exception of attaching the fence to the pole. With lumber posts, the fence panels can be directly screwed into the face of the wooden posts. When using metal poles, a step must be added to make the connection possible. Typically a metal strap bracket with holes at either end will be used to attach the fence to the pole.</P> <P>1 Dig a post hole where you want your pole to go. Ten to 12 inches across and 24 inches deep is typical. Set the pole into the hole and add a half bag of concrete mix. Add water to the hole and mix with a scrap of lumber. Check the pole for levelness from front to back and side to side, making adjustments as needed. Pack the remainder of the hole with fill dirt to hold the pole steady until the concrete hardens.</P> <P>2 Position the stockade fence panel against the pole. If the pole is between two panels, they will need to meet in the center of the pole. Space the panel off of the ground with a scrap picket or piece of one-by-four to prevent moisture from wicking up into the panel from the ground.</P> <P>3 Attach a fence post bracket to the pole, using a one-inch self-tapping sheet metal screw at the height of each horizontal rail in the fence panel. Use the bracket as a template, set it in place on the pole and mark the screw hole. Drill a pilot hole in the pole with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Place the bracket into position and drive a screw through the hole in the bracket into the pilot hole in the pole.</P> <P>4 Attach the ends of the bracket to the fence panel, using a treated deck screw. Drive one screw through each hole, typically two screws per side. Remove the spacer from underneath the panel.
