As the sheet metal bends, the inside surface of the&nbsp;<A href="http://www.expanded-metal-product.com/"><STRONG><FONT color=#1e1e1e>Expanded metal</FONT></STRONG></A> compresses as the outside surface of the sheet metal stretches, distorting the metal at the bend. This causes the metal to change thickness, making it difficult to pre-determine the exact radius of the bend. Determining the exact radius of a bend requires a hands-on approach. Working to a tight tolerance will ensure an exact measurement.</P> <P>1 Set the back gauge of the shear to 6 inches.</P> <P>2 Slide the end of the tape measure under the guard located above the shear bed and back against the back gauge. Adjust the back gauge until you have exactly 6 inches from the back gauge to the shear blade.</P> <P>3 Cut the piece of sheet metal 6 inches square with the set shear.</P> <P>4 Place two marks 3 inches in from one edge of the sheet metal with a tape measure and an awl.</P> <P>5 Slide the 6 inch square piece of sheet metal into the leaf-brake, align the two awl marks with the brake's clamping die and pull the clamping die handle to lock the sheet metal in place.</P> <P>6 Pull the bending leaf handles up to place a bend on the sheet metal.</P> <P>7 Remove the bent sheet metal from the leaf-brake.</P> <P>8 Rest the sheet metal on a flat surface.</P> <P>9 Set the zero side of the 12-inch steel rule against one leg of the bent sheet metal. The measurement subtracted from the 3 inch length marked on the sheet metal equals the radius of the sheet metal bend.
